Are Baked Beans Considered A Serve Of Vegetables?
Oddly enough, yes. In the UK at least (I’m not sure about dietary recommendations in other countries) baked beans now can count towards the recommended 5 daily portions of fruit & veg. (Over here it’s called the ’5 a day’ campaign – it was commisioned by the Department of Health and it’s been pretty successful so far). ’5 a day’ is just a guideline to work to, to encourage people to eat more fruit & veg.
The Foods Standards Agency says
”Beans and pulses can count towards the recommended five portions of fruit and veg we should aim to eat each day, but they can only make up a maximum of one portion a day.
You need to eat 3 heaped tablespoons of beans to make up ONE portion.
Beans are a good source of protein and they are rich in fibre. They also contain iron, but they don’t provide much of vitamins A, C or E. We need to eat a variety of fruit and veg to make sure that we get these and other important nutrients.
Tinned baked beans can be high in sugar and salt, so try to choose low-sugar, low-salt varieties when you can”.

Baked Bean Recipe?
My hubby’s mother used to make a great baked bean dish. It was a can of baked beans, ground beef, ketchup, mustard and some other things. I lost the recipe! Can anyone help me find it??? I’ll know it when I see it.
