Can Someone Suggest A Baked Bean Recipe That Is Not The Usual Fare?
I need a recipe for baked beans to take to a July 4th picnic -something unusual, something other than the ordinary run-of-the-mill baked beans that’s not too sweet or too spicy, but not bland either. I’ve also been browsing the Internet for a baked bean recipe using black beans or some other bean that is not usually used for baked beans. I welcome recipe ideas. Thanks in advance.

I’d go easy on getting too rad with the baked beans, especially if there are older folks attending the picnic. Most people expect and want the traditional navy or great northern beans with molasses and brown sugar sauce. Otherwise you may be bringing your casserole home untouched which will hurt your feelings, I’m sure. However, if you’re looking for recipes, recipesource.com or allrecipes.com are good places to start your search. You’ll pull up more recipes that you can ever read through.

Tom’s Baked Beans
Ingredients
1 28 oz. can Bush’s Baked Beans
15 oz. cans each of small Lima beans, Kidney beans, Cannelini beans, and Black beans- drained if possible (save the liquid to use if the beans get dry while baking)
3/4 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
1 medium Vidalia or other sweet onion, chopped
2 teaspoons of dry mustard (Colman’s recommended)
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1/4 cup of vinegar
12 oz bacon, cooked to crisp and crumbled
Splash of molasses
Method
Heat oven to 275 degrees.
Spray a 9 x 13 casserole with pan.
Mix all the ingredients; pour into prepared casserole and cover with foil.
Bake for 1 hour, then remove the foil and bake 2 hours longer.
