Why Do Some Sweaters Have Thumb Holes?

I have seen a few friends of mine with pullover Hurley sweaters that have in them. One of my friends told me the were made for fighting (maybe so you could form a fist without getting your sweater tangled up), but is that really what they are for? Also, where can you get a sweater with thumb in it?

The thumb holes actually orginated with horse riders..its annoys me how all these punks think its so cool ( if only they knew why lol)….it was just to keep your hands warm when holding the reins, while still be able to use your hands easily
