Is There A Real Difference Between Cloth Diapers And Just Crapping In A Pair Of Briefs?
I’m not a diaper expert, but I know cloth diapers are making a come back, how is wearing a cloth diaper different from pooing in your panties?

cloth diapers are made of several layers of fabric, cotton, hemp, bamboo, etc, then to put a cover on the outside so to avoid a totally wet bottom.
exactly the same as huggies or pampers, just cloth instead of paper, plastic and fluffy cotton bits.

by I can eat in public too!
you’re right, it’s basically the same. they’ve got a lot of layers of absorbent fabric and a waterproof outside to contain everything, but if you peed your pants, how your underwear feels would be basically how the cloth diaper feels. lots of cloth diapers have fleece that wick away moisture, but generally, babies who wear cloth need to be changed more because they feel the wetness quicker. unlike with a regular diaper that wicks away a lot more moisture. that’s clothed babies don’t get rashes as often!
and my mother, who works in a preschool, sometimes has kids come in who aren’t potty trained and she recommends the parent put on a pair of underwear on the kid followed by a diaper so they feel the wetness. thus making them figure out when to use the potty.
eta: an alternative to diapers is ‘elimination communication,’ where you read your babies peeing and pooping signals (like you read their hunger signals or their tired signals) and basically hold them over a toilet while they do their business. http://www.diaperfreebaby.org/

Well, then, in that thinking, how is pooping in a disposable diaper any different than pooing in your panties? The same thing is happening in all three.
There’s no difference. Babies poop in their pants.

diapers are thicker and better equipped to hold in the poop so it doesn’t go all over the clothes
briefs are a thin unabsorbent material that will not hold in crap and will therefore go all over the clothes too.
Unless you hold your kid over a potty every 5 mins, you need a thick absorbent diaper of some kind
