Whats The Point Of Smoking Cigarettes If They Dont Even Get You High?
all they do is give you cancer and bad stinky breath and rott out teeth and dont even get any positive or high feeling to make up for it. Whats the point of smoking cigarettes?

Cigs relax you, they calm you down and help you focus. But I would take pot over cigarettes any day.

I smoke because I’m always feeling stressed out and worried. Plus nobody likes me

They’re relaxing and habit forming. Its more about the hand movement than it is the smoking itself.

People start out doing it because everyone else is doing it (to look cool) or to relieve stress. Then when they start smoking, the nicotine makes them become addicted to the point where nobody can talk them into quitting. It’s really sad.

well people start smoking because they think its cool. WHICH IT ISNT and then they get addicted and continue. And when they dont smoke they feel stressed. Thos people are just ridiculous to start.

Smokers would say that cigarettes make them feel relaxed. I’ve heard this from a number of friends. Whenever they are feeling stressed they run out for a cigarette. Most ‘guilty pleasures’ dont give you a high as such but more a nice feeling of relaxation. Alchohol is another example of this.
The nicotine is the main draw though.

Most of us started when we were much younger, and not mature enough to understand the possible future consequences, or not convinced of how powerful the addiction would become. I consider it both, a calming thing, as well as a habit and and addiction; abstaining from smoking brings on the withdrawal symptons, including but not limited to anxiety, irritability, nervousness, and depression; these symtoms can be very intense and unforgiving in nature.
So why don’t many of us take the steps and quit? I’ll tell you exactly why we want to go on smoking. Despite most of us being intelligent, well-informed, and certainly aware of the long term riskss of smoking, many of us choose to continue smoking anyway; leading the list of whys is because it feels good to smoke. I can vouch for that; damn good! In less than ten seconds upon the first inhalation, nicotine passes into the bloodstream, crosses the blood brain barrier and begins acting on the brain cells. The nicotine just ingested will begin to mimic one of the most important neurotransmitters, Acelytcholine. This action provokes the body’s excitation chemicals that include adrenaline and noradrenaline, which causes an immediate rush of stimulation by increasing the blood flow to the brain. This leaves smokers feels energized and alert. Within 20 to 30 minutes after the last cigarette, however, a smoker’s energy level becomes sharply reduced. That “charged up” feeling the smoker had minutes before begins fading away and the craving for nicotine quickly returns. Psychological dependence is a major factor that can prohibit a well-intentioned person from quitting smoking because nicotine has such amazingly powerful, reinforcing qualities.
Other reasons why many of us continue to smoke is that we find it easier to manage stress even though we know that smoking is risky and dangerous. Many of us in this day and age juggle family and work responsibilities, and lighting up a cigarette is a welcome substitute to wind down their day regardless of the repercussions involved. Many more of us, myself included, find that smoking helps to keep off those unwanted pounds, and there may be some truth to that notion. Nicotine speeds up the physiological functions, especially the rate at which the body metabolizes food. When smoking stops, metabolism slows down, food is burned more slowly, and the pounds start adding. That reason alone is strong incentive for many of us to continue smoking.

ha good point.
but people just get addicted but they wouldn’t get like that if they didn’t start smoking in the first place. there is no point to smoking.

not to mention everything you own stinks!! the only thing i see appealing about it is that they seem to take breaks more often because they need a ‘quick ciggie break’
i think its a disgusting habit that is largely started because they want to look ‘cool’ in front of other people – but im sure other people agree with me that its uncool and gross =D

Mannnnn I say the same exact thing all the time. I think people do it to be cool (subconsciously of course) and then they just become addicted.

Hm, there are many reasons. Some people like the flavor, it is a stress release and helps many people calm down, a form of self-reward, along with many others.
Lets give you this analogy, whats the point of eating a hamburger? It gives you heart disease, cancer, can cause high blood pressure, strokes, heart-attacks, obesity. Sure it might taste great but is it really worth it?.. and plus it doesn’t get you high.

The point is – for me – that they DONT get you high. I used to smoke a lot of pot but it affected my grades, smoking cigarettes for me was the easiest way off greens. So, although it does give you cancer, it is better than something that could affect my life in the moment negatively. If you can’t handle weed (and you can’t handle it if you smoke every day) it will change you. Cigarettes won’t.

Once you start smoking its very hard to stop.
People mainly continue to smoke because the feel they have the “need” to… and its not really the need like any other. See, its the Nicotine that makes them continuously go back.
Again, once your hooked, its Very hard to quit… even if you know without a doubt you Will get cancer..
=((

Supposedly it’s relaxing but its a catch 22 because when you dont have a cig you get all jittery.
