What Kind Of Song Lyrics Did We Listen To?
So now that I’ve found the perfect radio station, I’ve heard a couple of songs I hadn’t heard in years. One was Johnny Get Angry by Joanie Sommers, which is about a girl who likes to provoke her boyfriend into getting angry and possessive. Another one is Lightening Striking Again by Lou Christie, which is about a young man who loves a girl, but asks her if she’ll please be true to him while HE is off sowing some wild oats because he “just can’t help myself”. A later example is Every Breath You Take by the Police, which is really the stalker’s anthem (every breath you take, every move you make, I’ll be watching you).
Are these just a little ridiculous? Can you think of other examples? I also remember “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?” which I used to play over and over on my 8 track tape player when I was 18. LOL

Here is a recent one I like
Every dog has his day,
But Today isn’t yours….

Some of them are pretty bad, the one by the Police being the most disgusting. Many songs refering to drugs, like we should be proud that we were space cadets half the time.

With the death last Wednesday of one of the greatest baritones in rock I had to bring up a couple of songs by the late Johnny Maestro. The Angels Listened In and The Worst That Could Happen.
In my opinion the greatest love song was written and performed by Buddy Holly;True Love Ways.
A wonderful question.

I listen to most music from the 60s and 70s, that’s why I like to ride in my truck, it has Sirius satellite and I can get just the genre that I like. Sometimes I hop over to country or southern gospel.

When I think of the fowl rubbish churned out today,I try and compare, these two usually spring to mind as dubious for the time, although there are some near the knuckle R&B artist from early 50′s
Floyd Robinson’s – Makin’ Love
What would people say?
What would people do?
What would people think
If people knew I was with you?
Makin’ lo-ove, makin’ love
Makin’ lo-ove, makin’ love
Shirley Bassey’s – Kiss Me Honey,Honey. I Think this one was banned by BBC
Kiss me, honey, honey, kiss me
Thrill me, honey, honey, thrill me
Don’t care even if I blow my top
But, honey, honey, don’t stop
I’d like to play a little game with you
A little game especially made for two
If you come close then I will show you how
Closer, closer, now
Kiss me, honey, honey, kiss me
Thrill me, honey, honey, thrill me
Don’t care even if I blow my top
But, honey, honey, don’t stop
Of course there was the class, like ‘who put the bomp’ Tutti-Frutti
I suppose most songs, especially late 50′s were teenage angst, with nice lyrics

Chances Are – cause I wear a funny grin the moment you come into view, Chances Are, you’ll think that I’m In love with you – Just because my composre sort of slips the moment that your lips meet mine, Chances Are I think that you’re my Valentine. In the magic of moonlight, when I sigh hold me close dear, Chances Are you believe the stars that fill the skies are in my eyes. . . . . .

And we have the nerve to criticize the music of today !!!!! I remember singing “Abba, dabba, dabba, dabba, dabba, dabba, dabba, said the monkey to the chimp. Abba, dabba, dabba, dabba, dabba, dabba, dabba, said the chimpy to the monk.” Now, that’s going back some time. We sang some pretty weird songs, but at least we omitted the curse words that in so many tunes today.

I have loved music all my life however, I started really paying attention to “pop” songs when my much older brother was playing them on his record player and listening to them on the radio. The Hit Parade was on TV and the ones that spring to mind are:
Red Sails in the Sunset
Allegheny Moon
I Love Paris
Three Coins in a Fountain
We’ll Have These Moments to Remember
September Song
The Theme From Raintree County:
They say there’s a tree in the forest,
a tree that will give you a sign.
Come alone with me to the sweetheart tree,
Come and carve your name next to mine.
They say if you kiss the right sweetheart,
the one you’ve been dream’n of,
Big blossoms of white, will burst into sight,
and your love will be true, evermore.

These words stick in my head from the song Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin;
“…I pulled my harpoon from my dirty red bandana”
I never did understand that until I got turned out @ age 43!
After that, songs like “Hit me with you best shot” by Pat Banatar & so many others made perfect sense to me in a strange way that I missed in my younger days!

I never paid as much attention to the lyrics as I thought I was, apparently. Which brings to mind the
song that reminds us of one aspect from songs of the 50′s and some 60′s. I don’t know the title, but
it starts with : “Who put the bop in the bop she bop she bop? Who put the ram, in the ramalama
ding dong? Who put the dip, in the dip she dip she dip”……….! Then he continues:” Who was that
man, I’d like to shake his hand. He made my baby fall in love with me”. There are other words like
boodly boodily shue, that come to mind from that same song also. It seems so silly now to think
back on some of the ‘fillers’ that were put into a song back when. I can’t think of others that had
suggestive lyrics or strange ones, and I am sure that I will be thinking of old 50′s songs all day in
trying to remember what their lyrics were all about. Much like a tune, you can’t help thinking about
once you hear it, and can’t get it out of your mind.

“Secret Agent Man” by Johny Rivershttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGZ0ntpSx…
Funny how this song was such a hit in it’s day because it’s not like the masses could actually relate to it.
Maybe it was like the movies in that it took people on a fantasy ride while those “Bond 007″ movies were so big.
