What Foods Are Good For Long Term Storage Other Than Mre’s? Can Dried Beans And Bags Of Rice Be Frozen?

I am looking for food products that can be stored for periods of time- just in case.

Dried beans and rice can both be frozen… but freezing food is not the best way to store food for long term storage. It is better to place them in air-tight, food grade storage buckets, and keep them in a cool dark place, they will last for several years when stored this way.
Because of the high probability of a power outage in a disaster situation, your emergency food supply should not include food in your refrigerator or freezer because you cannot count on those items remaining edible for more than one day in the fridge, or three days in the freezer.
There are several options and types of survival foods for long term food storage:
    - As a general rule, traditional grocery store canned foods have 18 months to two years before they expire.
    - There are several choices of specially prepared survival foods: MRE’s, Freeze-dried, Nitrogen-packed, and dehydrated foods. These foods are commercially prepared specifically for long-term storage, and for emergency food storage purposes.
You can NOT store grocery store items for five to ten years, as you can with dehydrated, freeze dried, MRE’s, or sealed foods packed in nitrogen or vacuum sealed containers. The main difference between the canned prepared foods you buy in the grocery store and the specially prepared survival foods is the shelf life and nutrition value, survival foods are superior in both.

Shelf life varies on what is stored and how it is stored…

    For example –

Powdered Milk bought from your regular local store will have a shelf life of 12-18 months (at best), but when sealed in a #10 can with a vaccum seal (all of the oxygen has been removed), it extends that shelf life to 20 years.

The same basic rule of thumb for packing applies to almost all products.

Powdered Eggs and Cheese will easily store for 5 years in a #10 can

Most Fruit and Vegetables (freeze dried or dehydrated) will last you up to 25 years in a #10 can.

Most grains will also offer a 20-25 year shelf life when packaged correctly and some – like wheat – can even get up to 30+ years.
