Please don’t be scared. Once you get past the first week, you will see that it doesn’t really make a big difference. You will meet new friends and you will do better by starting this grade again; you will be at the top of your class and not the bottom. (My daughter stayed back also and she was scared but, she gained much more confidence once she began the year and found out that she caught on much better and had more self esteem by repeating the grade). You are more concerned about your former classmates but they will get on with their lives and activities very quickly and they won’t be sitting there just thinking about the fact that you had to repeat the grade. It happens to more kids than you know about. You will have new friends to sit with at lunch, honey. Don’t isolate yourself from others. Everyone is a little scared when they are going back to school. You’ll see, it will be OK. Make sure that you talk to the new kids in your class and maybe even invite some to sit with you. Good luck! Think positive!

Well, if there’s nothing you can do this year to move up a grade, at least learn from your mistake and don’t fail again. Make sure you do all your homework, study, and go to school everyday. Maybe you can talk to a school counselor to see if you can do some extra work and move up to the 8th grade next year with your friends. If not, I’m afraid you’re stuck with the “5th graders” and you should try to make some new friends.
