Making Homemade Baby Purees?
My daughter is still almost two months away from starting solids, she is still exclusively breastfed, but I have some questions I haven’t really gotten answered at the websites I have been looking at. I will also talk to her pediatrician about it at her 6 month check-up.
At six months, how many times a day did you offer solids? And at what time of the day?
I’ve read that cereals are just filler-foods..Do you have to start with them or use them at all?
Before freezing the puree, did you add breastmilk/formula/water it was prepared in to thin it or did you add it after thawing it? Which seemed to work best for you?
How many times did you offer a fruit, vegetable, or meat before introducing another?
When did you introduce meat?
What did you use to make the purees (blender, food processor, etc.)?
Did baby have a favorite food?
When did baby start eating finger foods?
Do you have any tips about starting solids? Any good books?
The most helpful website I have found so far is wholesomebabyfoods
I know there are a lot of questions there, just trying to get prepared.
Thanks so much!

Absolutely talk to your pediatrician at your 6 mos visit. How often may depend on your baby’s growth.
At 6 mos our little guy was eating 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch & dinner) at or around the same times we eat. They really do eat better when you’re eating at the table too. It started out as just about two Tablespoons of solids (fruits, veggies). Cereal won’t be necessary if your baby is a good weight, but it is a great first food for the digestive track to get working (better to discuss this with your pediatrician).
I never mixed breastmilk or formula with any foods other than cereal. I did add water or a bit of baby juice to thin some of the purees and it was added before freezing. I didn’t freeze alot, as it was just as easy to make it fresh before each meal or puree the foods (veggies or fruit) the night we had it for dinner then serve it the next day.
After each “new” vegetable or fruit we waited 3-4 days, before introducing another “new” food.
We started meats around 8 months, but honestly, he didn’t care for them too much. He’s 1 year old now and still doesn’t eat alot of meat.
I used the Munchkin Baby Food hand grinder for most of the puree’s, and occassionally used my blender for larger volumes.
Our little guy pretty much loves all foods. Avocado, Squashes, Sweet Potatoes, Broccolli and Carrots are some of the veggies he enjoys the most.
Finger foods started around 9 mos, and at 12 mos he rarely has puree’s and is eating the foods that we eat at every meal.
Another tip, is once you do start solid foods, start offering him a sippy cup (with just an ounce or two of breastmilk or formula) with each meal. The Sippy cups that worked best for us are NUK with silicone (soft rubber) tops.
You’ve already found the best website (wholesomebabyfoods) And there is so much info there, that you’ll find it quite easy to create your own recipes and such once you’ve gotten to know which recipes and foods work best for you and your baby.
Best Wishes!

My babies really didnt eat solids until around 10 months old because they were just content on breast milk til then, like they did eat snack here and there of what I ate a bite of banana or a little nibble of mashed potatos but they really didnt sit down and eat purees. by the time they were eating they could eat with their hands and they ate chunks of banana to start and some strands of spaghetti squash for dinner.Worked for us and we didnt have to worry about purees and all the work of baby foods.

My daughter started solids at 4 months for medical reasons (too long to explain) Anyways…she will be 5 months old next week and we feed her solids twice a day. How much depends on what they want without really reducing their formula/breastmilk intake. She gets 2 cubes of veggies and 1/4 of a jar of fruit at one feed then at the next she gets another 1/4-1/2 jar of fruit and some oatmeal cereal. Not all babies will eat that much though. I make the veggies and simple fruits like bananas but I buy the rest of the fruit right now as it is expensive for fruits right now (at least where I live) and most of it isnt even very ripe. Once summer hits she can have fresh berries and peaches and pears that arent as hard as rocks and tasteless. I steam veggies then puree then in the blender with a little water. I make it really thick then freese it in ice cube trays. When I go to feed it I thin it out a bit with formula and warm it up. He favourites are squash and beans though she loves all veggies but carrots. Her fav fruits are bananas and apples though she will eat anything but straight pears. I never read any books on feeding solids. I didnt think it was necessary. Shes isnt on finger foods yet so I cant answer that.

My son is a week away from being 7 months. In addition to his 5 bottles a day, he gets 3 tablespoons of baby oatmeal for “breakfast” and 2 or 3 tbls of veggies for dinner. I’m am probably going to add in a fruit serving for lunch in the next week or so.
I started my son on the rice cereal. It does not have the nurtition that his bottle has, but it is a good food to get the baby use to solids. When you start the solids, its not really about getting the baby nutrition as much as its about getting them use to the new experience. Their main nutrition source is still from nursing.
My doc suggested starting with veggies so that’s what I did. He is starting on fruits this week actually. Although I was just reading an artile on Huggies website today that there is debate as to if that actually matters. =)
I always give my son new foods for 4 days in a row without adding or mixing anything else.
When making my baby purees, I frozen them as they were. Most of the time you will find that you have to add some liquid as you are pureeing them. Then after they were thawed if they seemed thick I would add water. I use an imersion blender for the purees. I have two “ice cube” trays that i freeze the purees in. I got them from a friend, so I’m not sure what kind they are. Its not nearly as time consuming as I expected. Usually less than an hour on sunday to prepare a couple of weeks worth. Especially in the beginning when they are not eating that much. Also, you just put what you need in the fridge the night before and you are all ready the next day.
My son started eating off a spoon at 5 months. I just started him on Rice Puffs to practice his fine motor skills and self feeding this past week… so 6 and a half months. I noticed that he was really reaching for the bowl and spoon when I was feeding him. So your daughter will give you signs when she is ready for her finger food.
I like to use the same website, it does have some helpful stuff.

At 6 months, I tried offering solids once or twice a day, whenever I had time. Everything was rejected at first except rice cereal and bananas. I think the cereals are a good idea because they have added iron, which babies need to get from solid foods, and most of them are whole grain, not just empty calories. Also, the cereals can be mixed with other things.
I have tried making some purees, but I haven’t frozen any yet. Usually I make small amounts (2 day’s worth) and refrigerate them until the next day. I am thinking about freezing some pureed chicken or beef because it’s hard to do meat in small amounts. To make the purees, I use a Braun stick blender. It has worked pretty well so far.
I introduce new foods whenever I get the chance. Most new foods I have tried to introduce are rejected. I usually feed my baby the same things every day and try to throw in something new every once in a while. My baby started eating finger foods at probably 7-8 months, small things that dissolve easily or biscuits to chew on.
My baby likes bananas, applesauce, bananas mixed with avocado or berries, sweet potato, rice cereal, and spinach mixed with rice cereal. I have a book by Annabel Karmel that I suppose I would recommend, although many of her recipes are a lot of work for a busy mom.
