cats are much smarter than we give them credit for…they associate time, smell, sound, and your body language with their actual food. if there are any key words you say, or any things you always do just before you open a can of specifically HIS food, he’ll catch on. smart kitty
Cats seem to have a built in clock, well, mine do anyway.( So do my dogs) How they know it is their food being opened though, really is beyond me. I have been feeding cats for over 30 years, and still can’t figure it out. I have tried to fool them by opening a can of something else around their feeding time, but they show no reaction to the sound. However, no matter how far away they are, out in their play area, (which is a long way from the kitchen where they eat) or anywhere else, they will all come rushing in like a speeding bullet.
That is funny because my two cats will do the same. I use the little cans that open with a pull of the lid. It makes a certain sound that other cans don’t. I actually use the opening of the cat food to get my youngest cat to come inside when I can’t seem to find him any where.
I swear they just KNOW its time to eat….my older cat decided today he wasn’t going to let his “sister” near ANY of the cat food today, he just sat on top of the cases like he was the “King”
Cats have terrific hearing and a brain dedicated largely to hunting.
If they can hear a mouse under the floor boards, they can figure out which kind of tin you are opening. The cat tin is probably a different shape, with different metal, and makes a different noise when it’s being opened.
After all, can’t you hear the difference? And your hearing completely sucks next to a cat’s.
I KNOW!!! it’s the age old question.i don’t think it will ever be answered.my cat comes running every time i use the can opener, and he has never once in his life had food from a can!! lol.
