don’t know what you mean by mushy……there is only one true split pea and true lentils……both are excellent foods ….Anderson’s split pea soup in California is famous and popular restaurant
Sorry but all the previous answers are wrong.
Mushy peas are peas cooked and cooked, you use very little water and just cook them till they are mushy, frozen peas are best for this and sometimes you have to mash them if they do not break down enough.
I suppose you can use green split peas for this
Mushy peas are best cooked with finely chopped onion and celery to bring up the flavour and add extra nutritional value
Here in Australia they are often served mashed potato on top of a meat pie and gravy over the lot, the most famous place in Sydney[some say in the world] for this is “Harry’s Cafe de Wheels” which is a caravan parked on the side of the road in the Woolloomooloo area 5 minutes from the centre of town.
Some restaurants serve mushy peas as a base for their meal stack i.e. they top it with mashed potato and mashed carrotts then place the main course on top ie. steak or fish.

I like mushy peas the best, and I would think they are very similar as each other. The soup of course having extra liquid
